Cancún airport taxi prices in 2026: the short answer

How much is a taxi from Cancún airport? Airport taxi prices are set by zone, charged per vehicle and paid at a counter inside the terminal. Sources dated 2026 range from about US$25 to US$120 to the Hotel Zone, US$80 to US$140 to Playa del Carmen and US$180 to US$250 to Tulum. An official price list was announced in March 2026, but we could not find it published online.

That spread is the real problem. On 29 October 2026, Reportur reported on a video a foreign tourist filmed at the airport (via Quinta Fuerza): a driver quoted him 1,200 pesos for the Hotel Zone, said it could go to 1,500 or 1,700, and the price dropped to 900 pesos when he started to walk away. Reportur put those at about US$64, US$80, US$91 and US$48.

Below you will find 11 destinations, with a taxi fare where one is published (undated ones marked *), next to our own flat rate, each taxi source side by side with its date where it shows one, how the airport taxi works, what the usually cheaper trip back to the airport costs, and when a taxi really is the better deal. We sell private airport transfers, so we have a bias. That is why every taxi number on this page names its source.

The official taxi price list: reported at the counter, not online

On 20 March 2026, at President Claudia Sheinbaum's press conference in Cancún, Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama said the airport's federal taxis would have to follow a price list to be released the following week (Noticaribe, 20 March 2026). It was to be shown inside the terminals with a set price for each destination, and the aim was that travellers could buy their taxi ticket in the airport (Quintana Roo Hoy, 20 March 2026).

The list was prepared with SICT, Mexico's federal transport ministry. SDP Noticias' article of 20 March 2026 (page last modified 12 May 2026) said there was no set date yet to put it in place. Social Car Cancún (July 2026) says official price boards have been going up in the arrivals corridors since March 2026, airportcancun.com (August 2026) describes the taxi desk as a counter with a price board, and AllTransfers (September 2026) says the fare is displayed at the airport counter.

What we could not find is the list itself, published anywhere you can read it. In September 2026, the eTransfers guide wrote that neither ASUR nor the Quintana Roo government publishes an official table, and AllTransfers said it had no current official source to cite. The ground-transport page of ASUR, the company that runs Cancún airport, read on 3 November 2026, lists the taxi counters in the Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 walkways but shows no fares. So you may see a price board when you land, but as far as we could find, you cannot check it before you fly. Until the list is published where you can read it in advance, treat every taxi fare you find online, including the ones on this page, as a reference.

Cancún airport taxi prices by source, side by side

These are the walk-up taxi fares we found for the Hotel Zone, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, with each page's date where it shows one. We left out pre-booked “taxi” prices sold by transfer sites and two more undated pages. Several of these sites sell their own airport transfers, as we do. The eTransfers guide quotes the airportcancun.com range, so we count it once. cancunairport.com is a private website, not the airport operator.

Two things stand out. The written ranges are wide, and the video reported in October 2026 shows a driver asking up to 1,700 pesos (about US$91), in the upper part of the Hotel Zone range. And no source we found publishes a walk-up taxi fare to Playa Mujeres, Costa Mujeres or Chiquilá, the Holbox ferry town, so for those routes you only get a price at the counter. For the routes marked * in the first table, no 2026-dated source gives a figure; cancunairport.com (no date) lists Downtown and Puerto Juárez US$45+, Puerto Aventuras US$96+ and Akumal US$124+.

How the airport taxi works at Cancún airport

They are federal taxis. The airport is a federal zone. In January 2025, state secretary Cristina Torres told reporters, about a 2,000-peso fare complaint, that “SICT is the one who rules there” (Riviera Maya News).
You pay at a counter inside. After customs you pay at the counter, get a ticket and hand it to the dispatcher outside, who assigns the car (eTransfers, September 2026; airportcancun.com, August 2026). Two 2026 guides say the counter price is fixed and not negotiable.
The price is per car, by zone. A sedan takes up to four passengers with normal luggage. More people, big suitcases, a stroller or golf clubs mean a van, which costs considerably more (eTransfers, September 2026).
Give the hotel name, not just the area. The Hotel Zone is a 15-kilometre strip, and kilometre 4 and kilometre 20 are not the same fare (airportcancun.com, August 2026).
Payment: sources disagree. airportcancun.com (August 2026) says card or cash, with pesos cheaper than dollars because the counter sets its own exchange rate. Welcome Pickups (May 2025) says cash only.
Only authorised transport picks up. At the terminal, only authorised taxis, ADO buses and transfers with a permit may take passengers (eTransfers, September 2026).

Can you take Uber or a city taxi from Cancún airport?

Rarely at arrivals. eTransfers (September 2026) says only authorised taxis, ADO buses and transfers with a permit may pick up passengers in the airport's federal zone. Our Uber at Cancún Airport guide covers the 2024 court ruling, Uber Taxi (an authorised airport taxi ordered through the app at taxi prices), and why most regular Uber drivers still decline airport pickups.

City taxis do take you to the airport, and that is usually the cheaper direction (next section). On a tight budget, the ADO bus leaves from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 according to ASUR; fares and stops are in our ADO bus at Cancún airport guide.

Taxi from your hotel back to Cancún airport

The return trip is a different service: a city taxi, priced by the state, not an airport taxi. Quintana Roo's 2019 tariff, published in the state's official gazette and reported by UnoTV in January 2023, set these fares per car of one to four passengers:

  • Hotels in “zona A” (UnoTV's term; it does not say which part of the city that covers): 300 pesos in a taxi hailed on the street, 400 pesos from a taxi rank.
  • Downtown Cancún: 324 pesos. From the Malecón Tajamar: 301 pesos.
  • Moon Palace, Punta Sam and Royalton area: up to 1,240 pesos.
  • Hotel Zone, zones 1 to 4: the same article also gives 1,035 pesos from the Hotel Zone, depending on the zone (1 to 4). It does not explain how that fits with the zona A figures, so we show both.

Those are 2019 figures. In September 2026, the eTransfers guide reported 400 to 600 pesos from the Hotel Zone. We could not find the original state document, and the state's tariff page returned an error when we checked, so ask your hotel's front desk for the current fare and agree it before you get in.

For comparison, a TT & More round trip to the Hotel Zone is US$78: the way back adds US$38 to the US$40 arrival, with a pickup time set in advance.

Taxi or private transfer: three worked examples

A couple to the Hotel Zone, one way. Taxi: US$25 to US$120 in 2026 sources. TT & More: US$40 for the vehicle, booked ahead. If the counter quotes you under US$40, the taxi is cheaper; if it quotes 1,200 pesos or more, it is not.
A family of five with suitcases to Playa del Carmen. Five people do not fit a four-passenger sedan, so the counter sends a van, which costs considerably more (eTransfers). The dated 2026 taxi range to Playa del Carmen is US$80–140, and the sources do not say which vehicle size that is. TT & More: US$74 for 1 to 8 passengers in a Toyota Hiace or Nissan Urvan van, 60 to 75 minutes.
A group of eight to Tulum. The dated 2026 taxi range is US$180–250 per vehicle, and the sources do not say which vehicle size. If those are per-sedan fares, two taxis come to US$360–500; one van costs more than a sedan. TT & More: US$155 one way or US$300 round trip for the whole group in one van, 90 to 110 minutes.

The walk between customs and the exit

After customs you walk past a row of desks selling transport and timeshare tours (airportcancun.com, August 2026). Social Car Cancún (July 2026) notes that some are timeshare desks and others are resellers linked to no one. If you want a taxi, buy it at the authorised counter. If you booked a transfer, walk past every desk without stopping.

A TT & More driver waits at your terminal's meeting point with a TT & MORE sign and official airport ID: Terminal 3 at the Margaritaville bar by the map, Terminal 2 international at the Welcome Bar, Terminal 2 domestic right through the exit doors, and Terminal 4 out through the exit doors at column C. Not sure which terminal you land at? Check our Cancún airport terminals guide, and our Cancún airport pickup guide walks you through finding your driver.

7 tips before you pay for a Cancún airport taxi

  1. Name your hotel at the counter, not just the area, and check the price on the ticket before you leave the building.
  2. Confirm it is per vehicle. The fare is per car, but per-person charging has been reported (UnoTV, 2023).
  3. Count heads and bags. A sedan takes up to four passengers with normal luggage; more means a van at a higher fare.
  4. Carry pesos. One 2026 guide says pesos cost less than dollars at the counter; a 2025 guide says cash only.
  5. Note the taxi's number and plates. Photograph the número económico on the door and the plates before you load the bags, and keep any receipt (Social Car Cancún, July 2026).
  6. Buy at the counter, not from a driver. Two 2026 guides say the counter price is fixed. In the video reported in October 2026, a driver quoted 1,200 to 1,700 pesos for the Hotel Zone and dropped to 900 when the tourist walked away.
  7. Plan the way back now. A city taxi from the Hotel Zone was reported at 400 to 600 pesos in 2026, or book a round trip.

Is there an official taxi price list at Cancún airport?

One was announced on 20 March 2026 by Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama. Social Car Cancún (July 2026) says official price boards have been going up in the arrivals corridors since March 2026, and AllTransfers (September 2026) says the fare is displayed at the counter. But as of 3 November 2026 we could not find the list published online, so as far as we know you cannot check it before you fly, and ASUR's ground-transport page shows no taxi fares.

Are Cancún airport taxis priced per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle, by zone: a September 2026 eTransfers guide says the price is per car, not per person, and that a sedan takes up to four passengers with normal luggage. In 2023 UnoTV reported drivers charging per person on the route to downtown, up to 250 pesos per passenger, so check that the price on your ticket covers the whole car.

Can I pay a Cancún airport taxi with a credit card?

Sources disagree. airportcancun.com (August 2026) says the counter takes card or cash and that pesos cost less than dollars because the counter sets its own exchange rate. Welcome Pickups (May 2025) says the airport taxis only accept cash. Carry pesos to be safe.

How much is a taxi from my hotel to Cancún airport?

Usually less than the other way, because it is a city taxi. Quintana Roo's 2019 tariff, as reported by UnoTV in 2023, set 300 pesos in a street taxi or 400 pesos from a taxi rank from hotels in what UnoTV calls zona A, and 324 pesos from downtown. A September 2026 eTransfers guide reports 400 to 600 pesos from the Hotel Zone. Agree the fare before you get in.

Can I take an Uber from Cancún airport?

Rarely at arrivals. eTransfers (September 2026) says only authorised taxis, ADO buses and transfers with a permit may pick up passengers in the airport's federal zone. Uber Taxi sends an authorised airport taxi through the app at taxi prices. Our Uber at Cancún Airport guide covers the 2024 court ruling and why most regular drivers still decline airport pickups.

Is a taxi cheaper than a private transfer from Cancún airport?

Sometimes, to the Hotel Zone: the 2026 taxi range starts at about US$25, below our US$40, and goes up to about US$120. For Playa del Carmen (US$80–140) and Tulum (US$180–250), the dated 2026 taxi ranges start above our US$74 and US$155 per vehicle. Older or undated figures are lower (cancunairport.com from US$70 and US$124, no date), so ask at the counter.

Is there a taxi from Cancún airport to the Isla Mujeres ferry or to Holbox?

cancunairport.com, a private site that shows no date, lists a regular taxi fare from US$45 to Puerto Juárez, the Isla Mujeres ferry pier. We found no published walk-up taxi fare to Chiquilá, the Holbox ferry town, about 2 hours 10 minutes from the airport. TT & More charges US$45 to Puerto Juárez and US$240 to Chiquilá, per vehicle.
