The 30-second answer: which Cancun Airport terminal is yours?

Cancun Airport (CUN) has four terminals. Terminal 3 handles most US and Canadian legacy carriers — American, Delta, United, Spirit, Air Canada and British Airways. Terminal 4, opened in 2017, has Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, Aeroméxico and most European airlines. Terminal 2 is domestic plus Volaris, VivaAerobus and Alaska. Terminal 1 is private flights only, returning to commercial service in mid-2026.

Two things trip travellers up. Most guides online have Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 backwards — they put American, United and Delta in T4 and call T3 “the charter terminal”. It is the other way round. And Southwest is not in Terminal 2, which is the other error we see repeated everywhere.

Below is the full airline list, verified on 22 September 2026 against the airport’s own airline directory, plus the free shuttle that fixes it if you get it wrong, and where your driver actually waits at each terminal.

Which terminal is my airline? The full 2026 list

This is the table most guides do not give you. It is sorted by terminal, and it was checked on 22 September 2026 against the airport’s published airline directory and two independently updated 2026 guides.

Airlines do move between terminals, and a handful of sources disagree on a few carriers — JetBlue and Turkish are both listed in Terminal 4 by the airport’s own directory but appear elsewhere on older sites. Treat this table as a planning tool and let your boarding pass have the last word.

Terminal 3: where most American travellers land

If you are flying American, Delta, United or Spirit from the United States, or Air Canada from Toronto or Montreal, you are arriving in Terminal 3. This single fact is wrong on a surprising number of travel blogs, which describe Terminal 3 as a charter terminal and send US travellers to Terminal 4.

Terminal 3 is a two-level building: arrivals downstairs, departures upstairs. After you land you walk to immigration, collect your bag, pass customs, and then come out through a set of sliding doors into the arrivals hall. From there it is a short, busy corridor to the street.

That corridor is the part nobody warns you about. It is lined with desks staffed by people who will greet you by name, wear an airline-looking lanyard and offer to “confirm your transfer”. Terminal 4: the newest — and the longest walk

Terminal 4 opened in October 2017 and was built for 9 million passengers a year. Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier and Sun Country use it, so do Aeroméxico, WestJet and Air Transat, and so does almost every European carrier — Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Condor, Edelweiss, Air Europa, TAP.

It has 14 gates — fewer than Terminal 2’s 22 or Terminal 3’s 21 — but in our drivers’ experience it has the longest arrivals corridor of the three, and therefore the longest run of timeshare desks. Give yourself a few extra minutes here, and keep walking until you are out on the public sidewalk before you stop to look for anyone.

Terminal 4 is also where the airport’s current expansion is concentrated. ASUR’s Phase 2 works on Terminal 4 run alongside the Terminal 1 rebuild, both aimed at easing congestion before the summer of 2026.

Terminal 2: domestic flights, Alaska, and the ADO bus

Terminal 2 is the oldest of the three active buildings and the smallest. It handles domestic Mexican flights — Volaris, VivaAerobus, Magnicharters — along with most Latin American carriers, Alaska Airlines, and a few European and Canadian operators such as Neos, Sunwing and Swoop.

If you are connecting from Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, this is almost certainly where you land. It is a calmer arrival than T3 or T4: smaller hall, shorter corridor, fewer vendors.

Terminal 2 is also the terminal travellers are most often pointed to for the ADO bus, the public coach to downtown Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Buses do call at the other terminals too, so look for the ADO counter and the marked bay outside your own terminal before you go hunting for a shuttle.

Terminal 1 is coming back in 2026 — and it matters

Terminal 1 has been a ghost for twenty years. Hurricane Wilma wrecked it in 2005, and since then it has handled only private jets and charters through the airport’s FBO. Its 7 gates have sat outside the commercial system ever since.

The pressure to bring them back is easy to see in the numbers. Cancun handled 29.3 million passengers in 2025, 19.5 million of them international, across flights to more than 100 cities — making it the second busiest airport in Mexico, on three terminals built for far less.

That is changing. ASUR is gutting, expanding and modernising Terminal 1 to bring it back for scheduled commercial traffic in mid-2026, as part of a 1.4 billion dollar investment that also covers Phase 2 of Terminal 4. The airport currently runs up to 680 flight operations a day, and the rebuild is meant to take the pressure off.

The driver behind the timing is the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cancun is the only Mexican airport with nonstop flights to all sixteen official host cities across Mexico, the United States and Canada, so fans are using it as a base — beach first, connecting flight to the match after.

What this means for you: if you are flying into Cancun in the second half of 2026 or later, check your terminal again even if you have flown this route before. Airlines will be redistributed when T1 opens.

How to confirm your terminal in ten seconds

Every list online, this one included, is a snapshot. Airlines move. Here is the order of authority, strongest first:

You went to the wrong terminal. Now what?

It happens, and it is a twenty-minute problem, not a ruined day.

A free shuttle bus connects all of the terminals. You board at the information module outside each terminal. The buses are air conditioned, they have ramps for wheelchairs and passengers with reduced mobility, and you can bring your luggage — you do not need to be travelling light to use it.

The honest caveat: waits can reach about 20 minutes. The ride is short, but between walking out, waiting, riding and walking back in, budget 30 to 40 minutes to change terminals. If you are making a tight connection between two terminals, that number is the one to plan around, not the drive time.

If you already have a transfer booked and you have walked out of the wrong building, do not wander the sidewalk. Message your driver. A local operator will either come to where you are or tell you exactly which shuttle to take.

Where your driver actually waits, terminal by terminal

This is the part the big travel sites cannot tell you, because they have never stood there.

Your driver waits outside the arrivals exit of the terminal your flight lands in — not in a central meeting hall, and not inside the baggage area. In every terminal the pattern is the same: you clear customs, you walk the corridor past the timeshare desks, and you keep going until you are through the doors and out on the public sidewalk. That is where a legitimate driver is standing, holding a sign with your surname.

Three rules that hold at T2, T3 and T4 alike:

• Do not stop inside the corridor. Anyone who approaches you before you are outside is selling something, however official the lanyard looks.
• Give your flight number when you book, not your terminal. Dispatch maps the flight to the airline, the terminal and the live arrival time. It is also how the driver knows you are two hours late without you having to find Wi-Fi.
• Have your driver’s WhatsApp before you fly. One message solves in thirty seconds what twenty minutes of walking will not.

Does my terminal change what the transfer costs?

No. A private transfer is priced by where you are going, not by which terminal you walk out of. The same trip to the Hotel Zone costs the same whether you land in Terminal 2, 3 or 4.

What the terminal does change is timing. Terminal 4 has the longest arrivals walk and the busiest corridor, so if you land there at 3pm on a Saturday in December, expect to be slower getting out than someone landing in Terminal 2 at 9am on a Tuesday. A good operator builds waiting time in and tracks your flight, so this costs you nothing but patience.
