Cancun airport departure: the quick answer

For a Cancun airport departure on an international flight, be at the terminal 3 hours before take-off. Then work backwards: add the drive from your hotel, from about 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone to 110 minutes from Tulum, plus 30 minutes of margin. For a 2 p.m. flight, leave the Hotel Zone around 10 a.m.

Below is the table we use ourselves to plan return pickups: one row for each area, the time to leave the hotel for a morning, midday or evening flight. After it: the airlines’ real check-in deadlines, which terminal you leave from, the departure tax question, Visitax, security and what to do when the maths says 2 a.m.

How we calculated it: flight time, minus 3 hours at the airport (Delta’s advice for international flights), minus the longest drive in our own estimate for that area, minus 30 minutes of margin. Drive times are TT & More’s private-transfer estimates; the Playa Mujeres range is the one in our Excellence Playa Mujeres guide. Domestic flight? You can usually leave one hour later. Checked 2 October 2026.

Step 1: the airport part (what the airlines actually say)

“Three hours” is the number everyone repeats, so we went to the airlines’ own pages. Here is what three of the biggest carriers at Cancun publish for international flights:

AirlineRecommended arrivalCheck-in closesBe at the gate
DeltaAt least 3 hours when travelling outside the USA60 minutes before departure45 minutes before
WestJet2 hours 30 minutes (international)60 minutes before; bags recommended 90 minutes before40 minutes before; boarding cut-off 15 minutes
Air CanadaCheck-in and bag drop open 4 hours before60 minutes before45 minutes before (30 for flights to the US)

Read the third column carefully. Arriving 60 minutes before an international flight does not mean you are early; it means check-in has just closed. The three hours are there to absorb the queues you cannot see from your hotel: a dozen flights checking in at once, the security line and, at Terminals 3 and 4, the occasional Visitax check before the escalators.

For domestic flights inside Mexico, the common guideline in Cancun guides is 2 hours. That one comes from transfer and travel guides rather than an airline page, so check your own airline’s rule on your booking.

Cancun airport departure checklist (checked 2 October 2026)

Be at the airport: 3 hours before an international flight, about 2 before a domestic one.
Check-in closes: 60 minutes before at Delta, WestJet and Air Canada.
Terminal: the one your airline uses; tell the driver your airline.
Departure tax: already in your ticket (TUA).
Visitax: 293 pesos per foreign visitor, paid online before you go.
Liquids: 100 ml containers, your own zip bag.

Step 2: the drive (where sources disagree)

The road is where most departure plans go wrong, and the published drive times are not the same everywhere. Here is what three sources say for the same trips:

FromTT & More (private)Happy Shuttle CancunSal! Revista (Aug 2026)
Hotel ZoneAbout 25 min30–60 min30–45 min
Puerto MorelosAbout 25 min30–45 minNot stated
Playa del Carmen60–75 min45–75 min1 to 1.5 hours
Tulum90–110 min1.5 to 2 hours (with Akumal)Can easily exceed 2 hours

Our honest reading: our times are for a private vehicle going straight to the airport with no other stops, which is why they sit at the short end. A shared shuttle that collects at several hotels can take much longer. That is why our table above adds 30 minutes of margin on top of the longest time in our range, not the shortest.

Sal! Revista’s August 2026 piece makes a fair point too: the old “leave five hours before, whatever happens” advice is out of date for a Hotel Zone guest. From the Hotel Zone, leaving about 4 hours before an international flight is plenty. From Tulum it is about 5 hours 20 minutes.

Add time in high season. Island Life Mexico lists the busiest periods as mid-December to mid-January, mid-March to late April and late July to late August. Early-morning departures and weekends in those weeks are when we would add another half hour.

Which terminal do you depart from?

You leave from the terminal your airline uses, the same building you would arrive in. In short: Terminal 3 for American, Delta, United, Spirit and Air Canada; Terminal 4 for Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, Aeroméxico, WestJet, Air Transat and most European airlines; Terminal 2 for domestic flights, Volaris and VivaAerobus. Our Cancun airport terminals guide has the full 2026 list.

In Terminal 3, departures are upstairs and arrivals downstairs. Two habits save you trouble:

  • Tell your driver the airline, not just the flight time. We drop you at the departures door of the right terminal.
  • Check the boarding pass before you get out. If you end up at the wrong building, the free shuttle between terminals can mean a wait of up to 20 minutes; budget 30 to 40 minutes to change.

Departure day, step by step

  1. Check in online the day before if your airline allows it. Air Canada, for example, opens online check-in 24 hours before departure.
  2. Pay Visitax if you have not yet. It is 293 pesos per foreign visitor in 2026, at visitax.gob.mx; our Visitax guide explains it.
  3. Check out and meet your driver in the lobby at the time from the table above. Bags in the back, straight to the airport, no other passengers.
  4. Drop-off at departures. Go to your airline’s counter or bag drop. Air Canada opens check-in and bag drop 4 hours before departure.
  5. Security. Liquids in containers of 100 ml or less, in your own zip bag; the airport does not hand them out.
  6. Gate. Shops, duty free and food are after security. Be at the gate 40 to 45 minutes before departure.

Is there a departure tax at Cancun airport?

Yes, but you have almost certainly paid it already. The airport use fee, TUA (Tarifa de Uso de Aeropuerto), is built into your airline ticket. Mexican newspaper Informador reported the Cancun TUA at 861 pesos for international flights and 351 pesos for domestic flights in April 2026, VAT included, and noted that it is already in the ticket price. You will see it among the taxes on your fare breakdown.

Some older pages still say the departure tax is “paid at the airport” and that you must hand in your tourist card at check-in, and that losing it costs about US$50. That is out of date. There is no paper tourist card at Cancun any more, as our FMM guide explains. If you entered through the e-gates, keep the printed ticket: some travellers have been asked for it on departure.

The one fee that is not in your ticket is Visitax, the Quintana Roo state fee. Travel press reported spot checks in 2026 before the escalators to security in Terminals 3 and 4, with travellers who had not paid being sent to pay on their phones. We found no official rule about being refused boarding, but losing that time at the busiest point of your morning is reason enough to pay online the day before.

When the maths says 2 a.m.: early flights

The table does not lie. A 7 a.m. international flight means leaving the Hotel Zone at about 3:05 a.m. and Tulum at about 1:40 a.m. We drive at any hour, but if your group has small children or you simply want to sleep, consider moving to a hotel near the airport for the last night. Our Cancun airport hotels guide compares the closest ones, and a hotel-to-hotel transfer gets you there with your bags the afternoon before.

Leaving from an island is a different calculation, because the ferry comes first. From Isla Mujeres our Isla Mujeres to Cancun airport guide recommends leaving your hotel 4 to 5 hours before an international flight.

Groups and families on departure day

Every step takes longer with more people: checking out of several rooms, loading a week of luggage, car seats, a last bathroom stop. Our advice for groups is to use the table above and add 15 minutes, and to name one person who sends the flight details. If your group flies home on different flights, our guide to group transfers on different flights shows how to split the pickups.

A private vehicle helps here because the price is for the vehicle, not per person: a Toyota Hiace or Nissan Urvan van carries up to 9 passengers with luggage. Car seats are free on request.

How to get to Cancun airport for your flight

The options are the same ones you had on arrival, with one difference: on departure day a missed connection costs a flight, not just an hour.

  • Private transfer. Picked up at your lobby at the time you choose, straight to departures. With TT & More: US$45 one way from the Hotel Zone, US$80 from Playa del Carmen, US$105 from Akumal and US$155 from Tulum, per vehicle for 1 to 9 people.
  • Shared shuttle. Cheaper per seat, but it collects at several hotels first, so it needs an earlier pickup. Compare on our Cancun airport shuttle page.
  • Taxi or ride app. The rules for ride apps at the airport are in our Uber at Cancun airport guide.

Every way of getting to and from the airport is on our Cancun airport transportation page.

Book the return now, not on your last morning

The easiest departure is the one already arranged. Book a round trip and the ride back is part of it: Hotel Zone round trip is US$80 instead of two US$45 rides, Playa del Carmen US$155, Tulum US$300. Send us your departure flight and we set the pickup time using the table above. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the service, and you can pay by card, PayPal or Mercado Pago, or in cash in US dollars or pesos.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I get to Cancun airport for an international flight?

Three hours before departure is the safe rule. Delta suggests arriving at least 3 hours before when you travel outside the USA, WestJet says 2 hours 30 minutes for international flights, and every airline we checked closes check-in 60 minutes before departure.

How early should I get to Cancun airport for a domestic flight in Mexico?

Most Cancun guides say 2 hours for domestic flights within Mexico. Check your airline's own rule on your booking, and add time in high season.

When should I leave my hotel for Cancun airport?

Take your flight time, subtract 3 hours for the airport, subtract the drive and subtract 30 minutes of margin. For a 2 p.m. international flight that means leaving the Hotel Zone around 10:05 a.m., Playa del Carmen around 9:15 a.m. and Tulum around 8:40 a.m.

How long is the drive to Cancun airport?

With a private transfer: about 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone, downtown or Puerto Morelos, about 35 minutes from Costa Mujeres, 60 to 75 minutes from Playa del Carmen, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Puerto Aventuras, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Akumal and 90 to 110 minutes from Tulum. Those are TT & More's own estimates.

Is there a departure tax at Cancun airport?

Not one you pay at a counter. The airport fee, called TUA, is already included in your airline ticket. Informador reported it at 861 pesos for international flights and 351 pesos for domestic flights from Cancun in April 2026.

Do I need to hand in a tourist card when I leave Cancun?

No. Cancun no longer uses the old paper tourist card, so older pages that warn about a fee for losing it are out of date. Keep the printed ticket from the e-gates if you got one: some travellers have been asked for it on departure.

Do I have to show my Visitax receipt when I leave?

Possibly. Visitax is 293 pesos per foreign visitor in 2026. Travel press reported spot checks before the escalators to security in Terminals 3 and 4, where travellers who had not paid were made to pay on their phones. Pay online before departure day.

Which terminal do I depart from at Cancun airport?

The same terminal your airline uses for arrivals. Terminal 3 has the big US and Canadian legacy carriers, Terminal 4 has Southwest, JetBlue, WestJet and most of Europe, and Terminal 2 has domestic flights. Tell your driver the airline so you are dropped at the right door.

What if I go to the wrong terminal?

A free shuttle bus links the terminals. Waits can reach about 20 minutes, so budget 30 to 40 minutes to change terminals. Check your boarding pass before you get out of the vehicle and you avoid it.

When does check-in close at Cancun airport?

For Delta, WestJet and Air Canada international flights, 60 minutes before departure. WestJet recommends dropping bags 90 minutes before, and the boarding gate deadline is 40 to 45 minutes before departure depending on the airline.

What can I take through security at Cancun airport?

The usual liquid limit applies: containers over 100 ml are not allowed in your carry-on, and zip bags are not handed out, so bring your own. Shops and duty free are after security.

Can I book my transfer back to the airport in advance?

Yes. Book a round trip and the return is already arranged: send your departure flight and we set the hotel pickup time. With TT & More the price is per vehicle for 1 to 9 passengers, from US$45 one way from the Hotel Zone.

What if my flight leaves very early in the morning?

Do the maths: a 7 a.m. international flight means leaving Tulum around 1:40 a.m. If that is too early, sleep the last night near the airport; our Cancun airport hotels guide compares the closest options.
