Do you need an FMM to fly into Cancun? The 30-second answer

No. If you fly into Cancun there is no FMM form to fill in. Mexico’s immigration institute (INM) replaced the paper tourist card with a passport stamp or e-gate ticket plus a digital record, the FMMd. The 983-peso fee is already in your airline ticket. There is no paper customs form at Cancun either.

That surprises people, because a large share of what ranks for “FMM Mexico” still describes the old paper card, still links to an online application meant for land crossings, or asks you to fill in an “arrival form” that INM does not require.

Below: what actually happens between the plane door and the curb at Cancun in 2026, what you should have ready, the e-gates, customs allowances, what to keep for departure, and where your driver is waiting when you walk out.

What happened to the paper FMM tourist card

For decades, flight attendants handed out a two-part paper card: you filled it in, immigration stamped it, and you had to keep the stub and hand it back when you left. Lose it and you paid a fine.

That card is gone for air travellers. Cancun moved to a passport stamp in around August 2022, according to news reports at the time, and INM formalised the digital FMM nationally in an announcement dated 2 May 2023. INM’s own page for visa-exempt nationalities now says that at international airports you do not have to fill in, present or carry any FMM, because it is generated when you are admitted.

What you get instead is one of two things:

• A passport stamp from an officer, with the number of days you are allowed to stay, or your exit date, written in by hand.
• An e-gate ticket, a small printed slip with a QR code, if you use the automated gates.

Behind either one sits the FMMd, the digital record of your entry. You can download it from INM’s public services portal at inm.gob.mx, or by scanning the QR code at the booth. UK and Argentine government guidance says it is available for about 60 days after entry. Download it on your first evening and keep it with your passport photo.

The online FMM form is for land crossings, not flights

INM does run an online FMM application. Its form page offers one option: entry by land. It is for people driving or walking in from the US or Guatemala, who print it and have it stamped at the border.

If you fly into Cancun, you do not need it. This matters because several commercial websites that rank for “Cancun FMM” or “Mexico immigration form” collect your passport details through an “arrival entry form” that INM does not ask for. One of them is cancunairport.com, which is not the airport’s official site — Cancun Airport is run by ASUR, at asur.com.mx.

The rule of thumb: an official Mexican government page ends in .gob.mx. If a site that is not .gob.mx wants your passport number and a card payment for an FMM before a flight, close it.

What to have ready at the immigration booth

The paperwork is simpler than it used to be. The questions are not. Up to 180 days is the maximum stay as a visitor, and the officer decides how many you get.

INM’s own list of what a visitor may be asked to show is short. Have it on your phone, and ideally on paper too:

• Your return or onward ticket.
• Your hotel booking, or the address you are staying at. A paid booking is best.
• Proof you can pay for the trip — a card or bank statement is enough for most tourists.
• An invitation letter if you are staying with friends or family.

This is not a formality. Cancun refused entry to 10,427 foreigners between January and April 2025, according to local press, most often for missing or false lodging details, no return ticket, no proof of means, or inconsistent answers. INM data reported in July 2025 showed refusals falling by about 75%, from roughly 120 a day in 2024 to about 30 a day in 2025, and in 2026 the state announced tighter oversight of secondary inspection.

The practical takeaway: if you are a US, Canadian or European tourist with a hotel booking and a return flight, you will be through in minutes. Just check the number of days written on your stamp before you walk away. It is much easier to fix at the booth than later.

E-gates at Cancun Airport: who can use them

Cancun opened its first automated immigration gates in January 2023: 18 gates, 14 in Terminal 3 and 4 in Terminal 4. By May 2026 there were 40 e-gates across Terminals 3 and 4, alongside 54 staffed booths, and the state said passport holders of about 35 countries could use them.

The e-gates reportedly require a passport valid for at least 180 days. Keep the printed ticket: some travellers have been asked for it on departure, and it is your proof of entry. The authorities set a target of a 30-minute maximum immigration wait for the 2025–26 high season.

If you are travelling with children, everyone goes to a staffed booth together. That is normal, not a problem.

Visas and passports: who can just show up

• US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens need no visa to visit as tourists for up to 180 days.
• Nationals of countries that normally need a Mexican visa can enter without one if they hold a valid multiple-entry US visa, or residence in certain countries. Check INM’s list for your nationality.
• US passport cards are valid only by land and sea. To fly to Cancun you need a passport book.
• Passport validity: Canada and the UK say it must be valid for the length of your stay; the US says valid at the time of entry. There is no official six-months-beyond-departure rule, whatever some sites claim, but the e-gates reportedly want 180 days.
• Children: the SAM permission form is only for Mexican minors, or minors living in Mexico, leaving without both parents. Foreign children travelling as tourists do not need it. If one parent is travelling alone, carry the birth certificate and a consent letter from the other parent anyway.

Customs at Cancun: no form, no red button

The customs button that turned green or red was the most famous part of arriving in Mexico. At Cancun it has been retired. Mexico’s customs agency, ANAM, runs what it calls a new passenger model, with no paper declaration and no random-selection button. It started in Terminal 4 on 1 November 2017, reached Terminal 3 on 27 October 2020 and Terminal 2 on 25 May 2024.

After baggage claim you choose a lane:

• Nothing to declare — the lane almost every tourist uses. Bags may still be X-rayed.
• Self-declaration — if you are over your allowance. ANAM’s online tool at aduanafacil.anam.gob.mx calculates what you owe.

A few travellers still reported being handed a paper form at Terminal 2 in 2025. If you are given one, fill it in — it takes a minute.

Sources disagree on a few limits. The US State Department page still says one laptop and a lower allowance by land; ANAM’s own current pages say two laptops and US$500 regardless of how you arrive. We have used ANAM’s figures, since it is the agency that applies them.

What to keep for your flight home

There is no card to hand back any more, but you still need to be able to prove you entered legally. Keep these together:

• Your passport, with the entry stamp.
• Your e-gate ticket, if you used one.
• Your FMMd, downloaded as a PDF during your stay.
• Your Visitax QR codes — a separate state fee of 293 pesos per foreign visitor in 2026, which is not included in your ticket.

If you cannot prove entry you may be sent to the INM office at the airport to pay a replacement fee. The federal fees law sets it at the same 983 pesos as the entry fee; UK government guidance quotes about 700 pesos. Either way, it costs time on the day you can least afford it.

From the stamp to the curb: how long it takes, and where your driver waits

Plan on 45 to 90 minutes from landing to the sidewalk at a busy time. Immigration is often the quick part now; in 2026 travellers report the baggage carousel as the slowest step, with waits of 45 minutes or more at peak times.

That is the reason to give your transfer company your flight number, not a time. The flight number tells dispatch your airline, your terminal and your real arrival time, so a slow carousel costs you nothing but patience.
