Why is Akumal known for swimming with turtles?
Akumal Bay is a protected cove where green sea turtles come daily to feed on seagrass. Snorkelers can see turtles in less than 2 meters of water, often within 5 minutes of entering. It’s one of the most reliable spots in the world to snorkel with wild turtles, especially from May to October.
How long is the Tulum + Akumal Snorkel tour?
The tour runs 9–10 hours. Pickup around 8:00 AM, 1.5 hours at Tulum ruins, drive 30 minutes to Akumal, 1.5 hours snorkeling with certified guide, lunch break, and return. You’ll be back at your hotel by around 6:00 PM.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
No — mask, snorkel, fins, and life vest are provided as part of the snorkel portion. Bring reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen (required to protect the turtles and reef), swimwear, towel, and an underwater camera or waterproof phone pouch.
Is the Akumal snorkel turtle tour safe for kids?
Yes — life vests are mandatory for everyone, and a certified guide stays with your group the entire time. The water is calm and shallow (1–3 meters). Children as young as 6 can participate comfortably. Non-swimmers are safe with the life vest.

Sightings are very common year-round but never guaranteed — it's wild ocean. Green sea turtles feed on the seagrass beds in Akumal Bay and are spotted on the majority of snorkel trips. April through October is peak season. Life vests are mandatory, biodegradable sunscreen is required, and there is a 10-minute briefing before entering the water.
