Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Gran Cenote and why visit it after Tulum ruins?
The Gran Cenote is a partially open cenote 5 minutes from downtown Tulum, famous for crystal-clear water, freshwater turtles, and dramatic stalactites. After the heat of the Tulum ruins, a 45-minute swim here is refreshing and one of the best photo opportunities in the Riviera Maya.
How long is the Tulum + Gran Cenote tour?
The tour runs 8–9 hours total. Pickup around 8:00 AM, 1.5 hours at Tulum ruins, 5-minute drive to Gran Cenote, 45 minutes swimming/snorkeling, lunch break in Tulum town, and return. You’re back at your hotel by around 6:00 PM.
What animals can I see at Gran Cenote?
Freshwater turtles (they swim right next to you), small fish, and occasionally bats in the cave sections at sunrise/sunset. The water is fresh (not saltwater) and about 3 meters deep on average. Snorkeling gear is provided and highly recommended for the underwater view.
What should I pack for the Gran Cenote swim?
Swimsuit, reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen (chemical sunscreen is banned to protect the cenote), towel, change of clothes, flip-flops or water shoes, and a waterproof camera pouch. Lockers are available at the cenote entrance for a small fee.
What is included in the Tulum + Gran Cenote tour?
Private round-trip transport, certified bilingual guide, entrance to Tulum archaeological site, entrance to Gran Cenote, snorkel gear (mask + fins), life vest, and bottled water. Lunch is not included but there are many options in Tulum town on the way back.
Is Gran Cenote good for beginner snorkelers?
Yes — it's one of the most beginner-friendly cenotes in the Yucatán. The water is crystal-clear freshwater (~25°C), mostly shallow, with a roped-off swim area. Life vests are available. There's a short cavern section where small freshwater turtles and bats live overhead — bring an underwater camera. Biodegradable sunscreen is mandatory.
