It exists, for most visitors, as the place where the road stops and the ferry starts. It is nowhere near the tourist corridor: the drive takes you away from Highway 307 and the resorts, inland and north.

Step 1 — Getting from Cancun Airport to Chiquilá
This is the leg that decides whether the day is calm or fraught, because it is the only part with any flexibility. There are four realistic ways to cover it, and one that people keep asking about which does not work.
Private transfer
A pre-booked private vehicle meets you inside the terminal and drives your group straight to the pier. It is the only option where the driver is watching your flight number, so a delayed landing moves the pickup instead of losing it. ADO bus

Rental car
Driving yourself is straightforward — the road is paved the whole way and the last stretch is quiet. The catch is what happens at the end: the car cannot cross, so it sits in a Chiquilá car park at 100 to 150 pesos a day for your entire island stay. If Holbox is the main event of your trip, you are paying rental and parking for days you will not drive.
What about Uber, or a taxi?
Ride-hailing is not a plan for this route. Pickups at Cancun Airport are restricted and contested, and a 145-kilometre run to a village with no return fare is one most drivers decline. Step 2 — The Chiquilá to Holbox ferry
Two companies run the crossing over the Yalahau lagoon, and they alternate, so there is a departure roughly every half hour. Holbox Express operates the red boats, with air-conditioned indoor seating and a rooftop deck. 9 Hermanos runs the blue boats, the older service and the one locals tend to favour, with indoor seating and an open upper deck. The crossing is about 25 minutes either way and the fares are close to identical.
In practice you do not choose a company — you take whichever leaves next.

Bring cash in pesos: the terminals at the pier are not dependable. One correction worth making, because it is repeated widely: the first and last departures are not the same in both directions. Guides that publish “5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.” are quoting the Holbox-to-Chiquilá timetable. If you are travelling towards the island, your window is 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Step 3 — From the Holbox pier to your hotel
You will step off onto a wooden pier and into a place with no paved roads and no cars. Electric golf carts act as taxis and wait at the pier for every arrival; a ride runs roughly 50 to 150 pesos depending on how far along the beach your hotel sits. Many hotels will send a cart if you tell them which ferry you are on.
If you are staying in the village centre and travelling light, walk — it is five to ten minutes from the pier, and the sand streets are part of the point.
If your flight is late: the last-ferry maths

The calmer version of this plan is to decide in advance: if your flight lands after about 5:00 p.m., book a first night in Cancún and travel to Holbox rested the next morning. They charge roughly 100 to 150 pesos per day, several have shade structures, and they are used year-round by residents as well as visitors. Pay for the full number of nights when you arrive so there is no dispute on your return, photograph the car and your parking ticket, and take documents and valuables with you to the island. Leave nothing visible inside.
Worth doing the sum before you book the car at all: three nights on Holbox means three days of rental plus three days of parking for a vehicle you will not touch. For many itineraries, a transfer to the pier and golf carts on the island costs less than the car does while it sits.

Pesos in cash. The ferry window, the golf carts and many small businesses on Holbox prefer cash, ATMs on the island are few and run out, and card terminals fail more often than they work. Draw money before you leave Cancún.
Insect repellent. Holbox sits against a mangrove lagoon, and at dusk the mosquitoes are serious. This is the one item people regret not packing.
