Cancun airport to Bahia Principe: the quick answer

The five Bahia Principe hotels in the Riviera Maya share one complex about 100 km south of Cancun airport, roughly a 1 hour 30 minute drive. A private transfer from Cancun airport to Bahia Principe with TT & More costs US$105 one way per vehicle for 1 to 9 people. Since March 2026 every hotel has a new name.

If your booking says Grand Coba, Grand Tulum, Luxury Akumal or Luxury Sian Ka’an, the hotel now calls itself something else. Below: the old and new names side by side, which hotels are adults-only, what the drive really takes, what transfer companies charge, and how to time the ride back to the airport.

The 5 Bahia Principe hotels and their new 2026 names

In late March 2026 Bahia Principe dropped its old categories — Grand, Luxury, Sunlight and Fantasia — and replaced them with two: Explore, for families and groups, and Escape, adults-only. Hyatt announced on 25 March 2026 that Bahia Principe resorts were joining World of Hyatt; the trade press reports that the brand is owned and run by a Piñero–Hyatt joint venture.

The result is that the hotel on your package confirmation, your airline app and the hotel’s own website may not use the same name. Here is how they line up:

New name (2026)Old nameWho it is forOur transfer price
Bahia Principe Explore AkumalLuxury Bahia Principe AkumalFamiliesUS$105 one way
Bahia Principe Explore CobaGrand Bahia Principe CobaFamiliesUS$105 one way
Bahia Principe Explore TulumGrand Bahia Principe TulumFamiliesUS$105 one way
Bahia Principe Escape Sian Ka’anLuxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’anAdults only (18+)US$105 one way
Bahia Principe Escape TequilaBahia Principe Grand TequilaAdults only (18+)US$105 one way

Two of these deserve a warning. “Explore Tulum” is not in Tulum. It is in the same complex as the others, and Air Canada Vacations puts it 23.7 km from Tulum. If you tell a driver “Tulum”, you may be quoted the longer and dearer Tulum route. And Escape Tequila is new: a travel writer who stayed in the complex, at Escape Sian Ka’an, reports that it was carved out of Explore Coba after a fire in May 2025 and opened as a separate adults-only hotel in December 2025, so many transfer lists simply do not have it.

What to do: when you book any transfer, write the new name and, if your confirmation shows it, the old one. Our booking page lists the zone as Bahia Principe; choose it and put the exact hotel in the notes.

Bahia Principe Riviera Maya transfer at a glance (checked 1 October 2026)

Where: one complex at kilometre 250 of the Chetumal–Cancún highway, Akumal area.
Distance: about 100 km from Cancun airport; sources range from 95 to 110 km.
Drive: about 1 h 30 by private transfer.
Hotels: 5 — three Explore (families), two Escape (adults-only).
TT & More: US$105 one way, US$200 round trip, per vehicle, 1–9 people.
Resort partner: Amstar, private or shared, booked on amstar.com.

How far is Bahia Principe from Cancun airport? Sources disagree

Ask five websites and you get five distances. None of them is exactly wrong: the complex is large, and each source measures to a different hotel or a different gate. Here is what each one says:

SourceDistance from Cancun airportDrive time
Bahia Principe (Explore Coba page)100 kmNot stated
Air Canada Vacations (Explore Tulum)96 kmNot stated
taxirivieramaya.com100 km1 h 19 min
happyshuttlecancun.com (Explore Akumal, old name)95 km1 h 25 to 1 h 40
transfercancun-airport.com (Explore Coba, old name)105–110 km1 h 30 to 1 h 50
TT & More—About 1 h 30

Our honest reading: budget 1 hour 30 minutes and treat anything under 1 hour 20 as a quiet-road best case. The route is one straight run south on Highway 307 past Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras. Playa del Carmen is where traffic builds, especially in the late afternoon, which is when many flights from Canada and the US land.

The same highway continues to Akumal Bay, a few minutes further on, so our Cancun airport to Akumal transfer uses the same US$105 rate. If you are staying in Tulum itself, that is a longer route: see our Cancun airport to Tulum transfer.

What a transfer to Bahia Principe costs

Prices for this route vary more than the distance. Here are the published one-way “from” prices we found on 1 October 2026, all for a private vehicle:

CompanyOne way, privatePassengers
TT & MoreUS$105 (round trip US$200)1–9 per vehicle
taxirivieramaya.comUS$114Up to 8
happyshuttlecancun.comFrom US$136 per vehicleNot stated on the page
transfercancun-airport.comPrivate van from US$150Up to 8
Amstar (resort partner)Quoted on amstar.comPrivate or shared

Our price is for the vehicle. Two people or nine pay the same US$105, and the round trip is US$200, which is cheaper than two single rides. There is no airport surcharge, no night surcharge and no fee if your flight lands late. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the service. You can pay by card, PayPal or Mercado Pago, or in cash in US dollars or pesos.

The Bahia Principe pages send guests to Amstar for “private or shared” transfers. A shared shuttle sells seats and stops at several hotels on the way, so on a 100 km route it can add a lot of time. If you are comparing, ask Amstar for the private price for your group size and put it next to the table above.

Worked example: what a family of four pays, round trip

Using only the published prices above, for a round trip (airport to hotel and back):

  • TT & More: US$200 for the vehicle. That is US$50 per person for a family of four, or about US$22 per person for nine friends.
  • Two one-way rides at US$114: US$228 for the vehicle, if that operator’s one-way price applies in both directions.
  • ADO bus to Playa del Carmen: 216–270 MXN per person each way on the bus alone, before the taxi from the Playa bus station to the hotel and back. For four people that is 1,728–2,160 MXN in bus tickets for the round trip, with luggage and children changing vehicles twice.

For one or two people travelling light in daylight, the bus is genuinely cheaper and we will say so; our ADO bus guide has the routes. For families, groups and anyone landing late, the per-vehicle price wins.

Inside the complex: one rate, five lobbies

All five hotels give the same address, kilometre 250 of the Chetumal–Cancún federal highway. Bahia Principe’s Explore Coba page says the beach is 0.5 km from that hotel and the golf course 2.5 km away; a travel writer who stayed at Escape Sian Ka’an reports free golf-cart trolleys running every five to ten minutes inside the complex. That tells you two things about your transfer:

  • It is one price zone. We charge the same US$105 whichever of the five you are in.
  • The hotel name still matters. The lobbies are not next to each other. Tell us the exact hotel so the driver takes you to the right entrance, not to the wrong end of the complex with your bags.

Guests at Escape Sian Ka’an have access to the whole complex, including Hacienda Doña Isabel, the shopping and nightlife area, according to the hotel’s own page. Families who want a day at Akumal Bay to snorkel with sea turtles are a short ride away.

Arriving: from your gate to the hotel

  1. Check your terminal. Air Canada lands at Terminal 3, WestJet and Air Transat at Terminal 4, and Sunwing at Terminal 2. The full list is in our Cancun airport terminals guide.
  2. Clear immigration and customs. The process is the same in every terminal.
  3. Walk past the booths. The people offering a “free ride” between customs and the exit are selling timeshare presentations, not transportation.
  4. Find your driver. Terminal 3: the Margaritaville bar. Terminal 2: the Welcome Bar for international flights, or right through the exit doors for domestic ones. Terminal 4: column C outside the exit doors. The driver holds a TT & MORE sign and carries official airport ID. Our Cancun airport pickup guide has photos of each spot.
  5. Drive south. About 1 hour 30 minutes, straight to your hotel lobby, no other passengers.

We track your flight number, so an early or late landing costs nothing. Need a supermarket or pharmacy on the way? A stop of up to 1 hour is US$30 with notice when you book.

Families at Explore Akumal, Coba and Tulum

Three of the five hotels are family hotels, so a lot of arrivals include car seats, strollers and a week of luggage. TT & More provides car seats free on request; give us each child’s age when you book. Our car-seat transfer guide explains which seat fits which age.

Count bags as well as people. A Toyota Hiace or Nissan Urvan van carries up to 9 passengers with luggage; a Toyota Sienna or Highlander carries up to 4 with limited luggage. Same price either way: tell us your headcount and bags and we send the right one. More than nine of you, for a wedding or a reunion? See our group transportation page.

Couples at Escape Sian Ka’an and Escape Tequila

Both Escape hotels are for guests 18 and over, so many arrivals are honeymoons, anniversaries and wedding guests. A private transfer means no stops at other hotels on the way, which on a 1 hour 30 minute drive is most of the point. If your group lands on different flights, our guide to group transfers on different flights shows how to split the pickups.

Should you fly into Tulum airport instead?

Possibly. Bahia Principe puts Tulum airport (TQO) 63 km from Explore Coba, and Air Canada Vacations puts it 64 km from Explore Tulum, against 96–100 km to Cancun. That saves road time, but Cancun has far more flights and usually lower fares, and airfare is priced per seat while ground transport is priced per vehicle. Our Tulum airport vs Cancun airport guide shows when TQO is worth it. Our published rates on this page are from Cancun airport.

Going home: when to leave Bahia Principe for your flight

Do the maths backwards from your departure:

  • Take the arrival time your airline recommends for an international flight.
  • Add about 1 hour 30 minutes for the drive.
  • Add 30 minutes of margin for Playa del Carmen traffic and loading bags.

Example: a 2 p.m. flight with 3 hours’ advice means being at the airport by 11 a.m., so leaving the hotel at about 9 a.m. Book a round trip and the return is already arranged: send us your departure flight and we set the pickup time.

Costs to budget beyond the transfer

  • Visitax. 293 pesos per person per trip in 2026 for foreign visitors, paid online at visitax.gob.mx. Our Visitax guide explains who pays.
  • Gratuity. Not included in our fare; tipping the driver is up to you.
  • Extra stops. Up to 1 hour for US$30, booked in advance.

Every town on this highway is on our Riviera Maya transfer page, and every option for leaving the airport is on our private Cancun airport transfer page. To book, open our booking page and choose Bahia Principe.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Bahia Principe Riviera Maya from Cancun airport?

About 100 km. Bahia Principe's own page for Explore Coba says Cancun airport is 100 km away, and Air Canada Vacations lists Explore Tulum at 96 km. Transfer companies quote anything from 95 to 110 km, because the five hotels sit at different points of one large complex.

How long is the drive from Cancun airport to Bahia Principe?

Plan on about 1 hour 30 minutes. That is our own estimate for the Akumal and Bahia Principe zone. Other transfer companies quote between 1 hour 19 minutes and 1 hour 50 minutes; traffic through Playa del Carmen is what makes the difference.

What are the new names of the Bahia Principe hotels in Riviera Maya?

Since late March 2026: Bahia Principe Explore Akumal (was Luxury Akumal), Explore Coba (was Grand Coba), Explore Tulum (was Grand Tulum), Escape Sian Ka'an (was Luxury Sian Ka'an) and Escape Tequila (was Grand Tequila). Explore hotels are for families; Escape hotels are adults-only.

Are all the Bahia Principe hotels in the same place?

Yes. All five are in the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex on the Chetumal to Cancun highway at kilometre 250, in the Akumal area south of Playa del Carmen. Guests at Escape Sian Ka'an have access to the whole complex, including Hacienda Doña Isabel.

How much is a private transfer from Cancun airport to Bahia Principe?

With TT & More it is US$105 one way or US$200 round trip, per vehicle, for 1 to 9 passengers. The same rate applies to all five hotels in the complex. It is a flat price for the vehicle, not per person.

Does the resort offer its own airport transfer?

The Bahia Principe pages point guests to Amstar, which offers private or shared transfers booked on amstar.com. We could not read Amstar's prices when we checked on 1 October 2026, so compare the quote you get there with the prices in this guide.

Which Bahia Principe hotels are adults-only?

Escape Sian Ka'an and Escape Tequila, both for guests 18 and over. Explore Akumal, Explore Coba and Explore Tulum are family hotels.

What is Bahia Principe Escape Tequila?

The newest hotel in the complex, adults-only. A travel writer who stayed next door at Escape Sian Ka'an reports that it was part of Explore Coba until a fire in May 2025, was rebuilt as a separate adults-only section and opened in December 2025. It was called Bahia Principe Grand Tequila before the March 2026 renaming.

My booking says Grand Coba but the hotel says Explore Coba. Is it the same hotel?

Yes. It is the same hotel under its 2026 name. When you book a transfer, give both names if your confirmation shows the old one; we will drop you at the right hotel inside the complex.

Where will my driver meet me at Cancun airport?

Walk past the booths after customs without stopping. Your TT & More driver waits with a TT & MORE sign and official airport ID: at the Margaritaville bar in Terminal 3, at the Welcome Bar for international arrivals in Terminal 2, and at column C outside the exit doors in Terminal 4.

Is Tulum airport closer to Bahia Principe than Cancun airport?

Yes. Bahia Principe lists Tulum airport (TQO) at 63 km from Explore Coba, against 100 km for Cancun. Most flights still land in Cancun, so check the total fare for your group before choosing; our Tulum airport guide does that maths.

What time should I leave Bahia Principe for my flight?

Take the arrival time your airline recommends, add about 1 hour 30 minutes for the drive and 30 minutes of margin. For a 2 p.m. international flight with 3 hours' advice, that means leaving the hotel around 9 a.m.

Do I need to pay Visitax?

Yes, if you are a foreign visitor. Visitax is 293 Mexican pesos per person per trip in 2026, paid online at visitax.gob.mx. It is separate from your hotel bill and from any transfer.
